Old Town Muscat/Mutrah

22 September 2009

Muscat (Old Town)

The old town of muscat is situated on the coast at the eastern end of the Greater Muscat area between Mutrah and Sidab. It is quiet and atmospheric area, based around its sheltered port which was historically important for trade.

The Al Alam Palace , home of the Sultan Qaboos was built on the waterfront in the 1970s. It has distinctive gold and turquoise exterior. The Palace is flanked by two forts, Jalali Fort and Mirani Fort built when Oman was under the Portuguese control.

Mutrah

Mutrah rests between the sea and a protective circle of hills and grown to be more vibrant than the port of the old town.

Mutrah Souq

Riyam Park - a gigantic white model of an incense burner is perched on top of the hill.

Mutrah Fort built by the Portuguese in about 1600 AD on a small outcrop of rock overlooking the corniche and harbour as as to neatly control the harbour trade but was eventually captured by the Omanis.

The coast along Mutrah which stretches about 3 km along the harbour with beautiful dhow boats by the sea.

.....and most fascinating of all, the clear water by the coast. We could see lots of fishes, quite unbelievable!!! Managed to catch a pic of one here, really nice fishes!!!!
